Your top five need-to-know roofing warranty questions

Bloomington Indiana Roofing

When it is time to replace your roof and especially during a storm – roofing contractors tend to promise the moon in order to capture your business and a lifetime warranty is often part of the package. But…

What does a lifetime roofing warranty even mean?

As an owner of a single family detached home, lifetime coverage means that your warranty is in effect for manufacturing defects as long as you own your home. Coverage period is reduced for non-single family or commercial structures.

The most important thing to understand is it is for ‘manufacturing defects’ – that being said is there much value in a ‘lifetime warranty’? The answer is yes – if you are using shingles form a reputable and stable manufacture such as Owens Corning.

Who can provide an extended ‘lifetime’ warranty?

For contractors that utilize Owens Corning products then Owens Corning® Roofing Platinum and Preferred Contractors are the only roofing professionals authorized to provide an extended warranty.

Who is responsible for the workmanship portion of the roofing warranty?

That portion is backed by the roofing company that installed your roof and it covers the labor portion of the roof install. The state of Indiana requires contractors to cover workmanship for 4 years which means if something was incorrectly installed or you have a leak or problem within 4 years the company that did the install is responsible to fix your roof at no additional charge to the homeowner. Therefore, it is super important that you hire a reputable company that has been in business for a long time, is well established in your state and is licensed, bonded and insured. If a company sells roofs at the cheapest price it ultimately puts them in a position to not be in business long-term. If the profit isn’t there to pay the costs and maintain their business they will likely go under. And in these trying times with Covid-19 among us it doesn’t take much.

There is only significant value in warranties when you hire a reputable company that is sustainable and they are using material from a reputable manufacturer such as Owens Corning.

What do I need to register my warranty?

The information needed to register a warranty includes installation date, shingle type, shingle color and number of squares. The company who installed your roof should be able to register your warranty for you.

Can I transfer my roofing warranty?

Warranties can be transferred to the second owner of the roof as long as the transfer occurs within 60 days of the real estate transfer. If you have an Owens Corning shingle warranties can be transferred by calling 1-800-ROOFING. When you call, please be prepared to provide documentation including proof of purchase, proof of ownership and transfer fee based on the year your roof was installed.

When hiring a contractor check them out on Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List, Google Reviews, Yellow Pages, Facebook, etc. Make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured and that they are a local business – super important should you ever need to utilize the warranty that comes with your project.
